The Netherlands’ Sjinkie Knegt is helping to raise the profile of short track in a country renowned for its long track speed skating dominance. Knegt was raised in Heerenveen, the mecca of long track for the Dutch, but found himself drawn first to inline skating and then short track. He made his Olympic debut at age 20 at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, but didn’t make it past the semifinals in any of his three races. Four years later, Knegt won a bronze medal in the 1000m race, becoming the first Dutch short track skater to win an Olympic medal.

Knegt has become a consistent medal winner at the world championships, winning 13 medals from 2012 to 2017. Some of Knegt’s highlights include winning overall gold at the 2015 World Championships and four total medals, three golds and the overall silver, at the 2017 Worlds. He’s won world championships medals in all three individual Olympic distances as well as the 5000m relay.
