Since making his X Games debut as a 13-year-old, Shaun White has evolved into one of snowboarding's most recognizable faces.

His career in the sport has been filled with success, but it was his back-to-back gold medals at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics that really vaulted him into a mainstream superstar. He's parlayed that into off-the-snow success as well: a fruitful skateboarding career, his own clothing line, a stint as a guitarist in a rock band, ownership of the popular Air & Style contest series.

But in his most recent Olympic appearance – the Sochi Games in 2014 – White fell short of expectations. He had qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in both slopestyle and halfpipe, but pulled out of slopestyle after citing safety concerns with the course. That left White free to focus on earning a three-peat in halfpipe, his signature event and one he was heavily favored to win. After a fall on his first run, White had several uncharacteristic mistakes in his second run that kept him out of medal position altogether. He ended up finishing fourth, while his good friend, Iouri Podladtchikov of Switzerland, took the gold medal.

It's that experience – which White admits he's never truly gotten over – fueling the SoCal native's competitive fire heading into the 2018 Winter Olympics.
