Sarah Hendrickson entered the 2014 Sochi Olympics as the reigning world champion and seemed to set herself up to win the inaugural women’s ski jump gold medal. Instead, she tore her ACL and MCL six months before the Games and was taken out of medal contention. She spent time recovering at her local coffee shop reading Harry Potter books. She was still able to secure one major honor, however: She was assigned bib No. 1 and became the first woman ever to ski jump in Olympic competition. She ultimately finished 21st.

She competed at the 2015 World Championships and finished sixth. Later that summer, she tore her ACL again and underwent another surgery. She finished eighth at the 2017 World Championships and cemented herself as the top U.S. medal hope in PyeongChang.
