Samuel Girard is the rising star of short track in Canada, poised to become the heir to the throne of four-time Olympic medalist Charles Hamelin. In just three seasons on Canada’s senior national team, Girard has grown from placing sixteenth at his first world championships to claiming an overall medal. Girard was still just a teenager when he won two silvers, in the 1000m and the 5000m relay, at the 2016 World Championships. Both times he shared the podium with Hamelin—the older skater finished first in the 1000m and was a member of the Canadian men’s team in the relay. The next year, Girard stepped into the spotlight alone when he picked up a silver in the 1500m and a men’s overall bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships.
