Morgan Cipres competed in singles skating for the first few seasons of his career, then switched to pairs when he teamed up with Vanessa James in 2010. It took an entire season for Cipres to learn the new aspects of pairs, and they made their competitive debut in 2011. Three years later, they had two French national pairs titles and two top-5 finishes at the European Championships on their resume, and were named to the French Olympic team for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. They finished 10th in Sochi. In the seasons since, Cipres and James have become five-time French national champions and also added a bronze medal from the European Championships in 2017. They placed eighth at the 2017 World Championships – despite Cipres missing his flight to Helsinki, Finland – doing their short program to The Weeknd’s “Earned It” and their free skate to Disturbed’s cover of “The Sound of Silence.”

James and Cipres began the Olympic season with a victory at the Autumn Classic. Then, they competed in Canada and France as part of the Grand Prix series, landing on the podium each time with a silver and a bronze. They planned on competing at French nationals, but withdrew as a precaution due to James’ shoulder injury. They recovered in time for the European Championships, where they placed fourth. They missed the podium – and the chance to spoil a Russian sweep – by 0.01 points.
