A two-time junior allround world champion, Miho Takagi made her Olympic debut at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics at age 15. She finished outside the top 20 in both of her events, and four years later narrowly missed making the Japanese speed skating team for the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

However, Takagi will enter PyeongChang as a medal threat in multiple events, and a favorite to make the podium with the Japanese women in the team pursuit event. Takagi and her teammates, which include her older sister, Nana, became the first female skaters from Japan to win a world title when they claimed team pursuit gold at the 2015 World Single Distance Championships. They earned team pursuit silvers at the following two world championships, while Takagi picked up her first individual world medals: bronze in the mass start in 2016, then 1500m bronze in 2017. She also earned a bronze medal at the 2017 World Allround Championships, sharing the podium with speed skating stars Ireen Wust and Martina Sablikova, who have a combined 13 Olympic medals. Miho and her sister were part of teams that broke the team pursuit world record three times in 2017.
