Even a sports fan watching biathlon for the first time will soon realize France’s Martin Fourcade is the best the sport has to offer.

At the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games, Fourcade’s biathlon prowess was on full display as he won two gold medals, one silver and never finished a race outside of the top 10 finishers. His wins in Sochi, combined with a silver medal win at the Olympics in 2010 in Vancouver, made Fourcade the most decorated winter Olympian ever for France.

Following up the Sochi Games, Fourcade set the French Olympic gold medal record at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics. With his third of the Games – a gold in the mixed relay – he set the record with six career Olympic golds.

Fourcade is an 11-time world champion, with 25 medals overall (including relays) from world championship competitions since he first lined up on the starting line in 2009.

This dominance has translated into Fourcade’s six-year run as the International Biathlon Union’s overall title winner, taking home what’s called the Big Crystal Globe, every year since 2012.

Small Crystal Globes are also awarded to the biathlete with the most points for each of four event disciplines at the end of the season. Fourcade has won 20 of them – accomplishing the sweep three times, including the past two seasons.

Fourcade began biathlon when he was 13 years old, following his older brother Simon into the sport. Early on the younger Fourcade did not have the drive or discipline to commit to the necessary training to race against the world’s best. He says his coach at the time, Thierry Dusserre, the Olympic bronze-medal-winning biathlete from Lillehammer for France, helped develop a more determined work ethic.
