Nicknamed “Super Dan”, Lin Dan is considered one of the greatest all-time badminton players: He is the only player to achieve the “Super Grand Slam” by winning all nine major titles, and the only badminton player to have won two consecutive Olympic gold medals with wins at Beijing 2008 and London 2012. (Though Lin also played in Athens 2004, he lost in the first round.) As a child, Lin was encouraged by his parents to play piano. He resisted, and started badminton training at 5 years old. Lin won the National Junior Championships at 12, and joined the Chinese National Badminton Team at 18. Lin is married to Beijing silver medalist Xie Xingfang. He has at least five prominent tattoos, including a Christian cross on his upper left arm. An autobiography, “Until the End of the World,” was published shortly after his London 2012 win.
