Lee Chong Wei was born in Bagan Serai, Malaysia. He initially had a passion for basketball, but was discouraged by his mother because the court got too hot. At 11 years old, Lee took up badminton after support from his father. When he was 17, Lee was drafted into the national squad. Lee won the silver medal in men’s singles at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, falling to Chinese rival Lin Dan both times. Following an eight-month ban for doping, 2015 saw Lee jump in the rankings from world no. 180 in June to world no. 5 in December. Last year, Lee also won silver at the World Championships in men’s singles. Lee is married to Mew Choo and has two young children: Kingston and Terrance.

Men’s singles silver medalist at the 2011, 2013 and 2015 BWF World Championships. Lee also won men’s singles bronze at the 2005 World Championships.


Ranked first in men’s singles by the Badminton World Federation for 199 consecutive weeks from 2008 through 2012.


Though Lee Chong Wei was initially the silver medalist at the 2014 BWF World Championships, the award was nullified after he tested positive for a banned substance. Lee was suspended from international competitions for eight months.
