Born in 2000, Laurie Hernandez will turn 16 just months before the Rio Olympics—making her eligible for the Olympic team the same year she makes her debut into senior elite competition. Hernandez went undefeated in junior division all-arounds in 2015, winning four straight gold medals, including the junior all-around title at the national championships. At junior nationals in 2015 Hernandez also claimed medals in all four event finals: gold on uneven bars, silver on floor, and bronze on vault and balance beam. Hernandez’s signature event is the floor exercise, where her early ballet training and sassy attitude earn her high scores and big cheers. She also shines on balance beam thanks to her high-difficulty skills and steady confidence. Hernandez only improved when she graduated to the senior ranks of competition in 2016. By mid-summer, she was sharing the all-around podium with three-time world champion Simone Biles and three-time Olympic medalist Aly Raisman at the P&G Championships. At the final pre-Olympic competition, Olympic Trials, Hernandez finished second in the all-around behind Biles and first on balance beam.
