A Dutch champion in the mass start and marathon, the Netherlands’ Irene Schouten will be a strong contender in the mass start, an event making its Olympic debut at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics. In a mass start race, up to 24 skaters compete against each other simultaneously, instead of in pairs like in other individual speed skating events. Schouten captured the world title in mass start at the 2015 World Single Distance Championships, and she also has a bronze medal in the 5000m from the 2016 Worlds. However, she left the 2017 Worlds empty-handed after finishing 22nd, over 41 seconds behind the winner, in the women’s mass start.
