After injuring her knee a few weeks before the Sochi Games, Enni Rukajarvi's participation in the Olympics was in doubt. But, in a gutsy performance, the Finnish snowboarder not only competed in the first-ever Olympic slopestyle contest, she also rode away with a silver medal.

When she returned to her hometown, Kuusamo, after the Games, she was greeted at the airport by a group of local children. The town's mayor said that that Kuusamo was ready to give her "whatever she wanted" as a reward, to which Rukajarvi responded that she just wanted "pure nature," according to Finnish media. Rukajarvi says that more people in her country have started to take an interest in snowboarding since her performance at the Olympics.

Rukajarvi has been a mainstay in women's slopestyle contests — and a frequent visitor to the podium — since her breakout season in 2011. That year, she scored victories at X Games, the Burton U.S. Open and the world championships.

In 2017, Rukajarvi collected a silver medal in big air, an event that will make its Olympic debut in PyeongChang, at the world championships.
