Emil Hegle Svendsen is a five-time Olympic medalist, four of which are gold. At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Svendsen won more medals than any other biathlete in Vancouver.

A year before the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Svendsen impressed the crowd at the 2012-13 World Championships, winning a medal in every event he entered, four golds and one bronze.

Once on snow at the Olympics in Sochi, a premature celebration nearly cost Svendsen gold in the mass start. Confident he would not be caught from behind, the Norwegian raised his arms in celebration as he neared the finish. France’s Martin Fourcade, attempting to win his third gold medal of the games, lunged for the finish. Svendsen was awarded gold only after closer examination of the photo finish.

Svendsen would add another gold medal to his 2014 Olympic haul in the mixed relay.

Since Sochi, Svendsen’s hot streak at major championships has began to cool. In the last three IBU World Championships he has landed on the podium just four times amounting to one gold, two silvers and a bronze.

At the 2017 World Championships, he finished no higher than eighth over six events. Despite podium appearances becoming more infrequent, Svendsen is the kind of biathlete who, if shooting well, will make a run at a medal in any race he enters.
