Aly Raisman was the most decorated U.S. gymnast at the 2012 London Olympics, winning gold medals in the team competition and floor final and a bronze in the beam final. Raisman, the team captain, also tied for third place in the all-around but was denied the bronze after she lost the tiebreak to another gymnast—giving her the motivation to work towards Rio. After taking time off, Raisman returned to competition in 2015 and quickly proved that she could still perform the world’s most difficult skills with her trademark consistency. She claimed the floor gold and all-around bronze at the 2015 P&G Gymnastics Championships, her first national championships since 2012. At the 2015 World Championships Raisman made uncharacteristic mistakes, including falling off the uneven bars, in the preliminary round and finished fifth in the all-around qualifying. It would have been a fantastic result for almost any other gymnast, but since Raisman’s score was third amongst her teammates, the two-per-country rule prevented Raisman from advancing to the all-around final. She rallied in the team final with solid performances on floor and beam to help the U.S. women win a gold medal by 5.174 points. Along with her three Olympic medals, Raisman now has four world championship medals in her trophy case: team golds from 2015 and 2011, team silver from 2010, and floor bronze from 2011.
